    The output distribution of important LULU-operators

    Two procedures to compute the output distribution phi_S of certain stack filters S (so called erosion-dilation cascades) are given. One rests on the disjunctive normal form of S and also yields the rank selection probabilities. The other is based on inclusion-exclusion and e.g. yields phi_S for some important LULU-operators S. Properties of phi_S can be used to characterize smoothing properties of S. One of the methods discussed also allows for the calculation of the reliability polynomial of any positive Boolean function (e.g. one derived from a connected graph).Comment: 20 pages, up to trivial differences this is the final version to be published in Quaestiones Mathematicae 201

    Analyzing Laminated Structures from Fibre-Reinforced Composite Material: An Assessment

    In the open literature there is available a tremendous number of models and methods for analyzing laminated structures. With respect to the assumptions across the laminate thickness, theories with Cz1-continuous functions are to be distinguished from layer-wise approaches, where for the latter the functional degrees of freedom can be dependent or independent of the number of layers. Transverse shear and normal stresses are more accurate when obtained by locally evaluating the equilibrium conditions. Guidelines are needed as to which model is suitable for what task. Especially for layer-wise models a fair judgment is missing. To ease up this deficiency two simple layer-wise models are evaluated and compared with models based on Cz1-continuous functions. It turns out that for standard application the FSDT with improved transverse shear stiffness is a good choice with respect to efficiency

    Technical note On modifying the Arrhenius equation to compensate for temperature changes for reactions within biological systems

    In this communiqué, we discuss the use of the Arrhenius relationship to describe the temperature dependence of reacting biological systems, such as those treating wastewater. We also discuss the use of the modified Arrhenius function, and those instances where its applicability is limited. We show that the error when using the modified relationship is 7% at 30°C, 15% at 40°C and 25% at 50°C. We conclude that whilst the modified relationship is acceptable at lower temperatures, in those applications where higher temperatures are reached (above 25°C) the error with using the relationship may not be acceptable. We present an Arrhenius equation for use in biological systems, which is applicable for all temperature ranges.Keywords: kinetics, biological processes, Arrhenius equatio

    The time dimension of neural network models

    This review attempts to provide an insightful perspective on the role of time within neural network models and the use of neural networks for problems involving time. The most commonly used neural network models are defined and explained giving mention to important technical issues but avoiding great detail. The relationship between recurrent and feedforward networks is emphasised, along with the distinctions in their practical and theoretical abilities. Some practical examples are discussed to illustrate the major issues concerning the application of neural networks to data with various types of temporal structure, and finally some highlights of current research on the more difficult types of problems are presented

    CAN PREDATOR TRAPPING IMPROVE WATERFOWL RECRUITMENT IN THE PRAIRIE POTHOLE REGION?

    We contrasted nest success for control areas and experimental areas in eastern North Dakota where we employed professionals to trap mammalian nest predators from late March to late July. In 1995, dabbling ducks averaged 53% nest success on four treatment blocks of 4,150 ha each; whereas on four control areas upland nesting ducks averaged 24% success. Diving duck nest success averaged 57% on experimental areas and 29% on control areas. American coot (Fulica americana) nest success also improved on experimental areas, but blackbird nesting and fledging success were not affected by the treatment. In 1994, nest success of upland cresting ducks was 52%, which was a striking contrast with upland nest success of 6% on the control area. In 1994 and 1995, brood counts were much higher on the experimental areas than on the control areas. Track counts revealed lower estimates of predator activity on experimental sites compared to control sites. This study provides the first strong experimental documentation that trapping, without the use of poisons, can effectively reduce nest predation and substantially improve waterfowl recruitment

    Self-motility of an active particle induced by correlations in the surrounding solution

    Current models of phoretic transport rely on molecular forces creating a "diffuse" particle-fluid interface. We investigate theoretically an alternative mechanism, in which a diffuse interface emerges solely due to a non-vanishing correlation length of the surrounding solution. This mechanism can drive self-motility of a chemically active particle. Numerical estimates indicate that the velocity can reach micrometers per second. The predicted phenomenology includes a bilinear dependence of the velocity on the activity and a possible double velocity reversal upon varying the correlation length.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, and 22 pages of supplemental material.     Improvements to the Indiana Geological Survey’s Petroleum Database Management System

    This poster was presented at the 2011 Annual Meeting of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, Eastern Section, in Arlington, Virginia, in September 2011.The Indiana Geological Survey’s Petroleum Database Management System (PDMS) is a web application that provides online access to petroleum-related geological information. Since its debut in 2004, the application has been widely used by the petroleum industry, academia, government agencies, and the general public. On June 6, 2011, a significantly enhanced version of the PDMS went online. New features include a robust search menu that permits elaborate queries of more than 74,000 petroleum wells, rapid and convenient online viewing and downloading of PDF-file well reports and both PDF- and TIFF-file geophysical and other well logs, and streamlined menus for easily accessing extensive well data. An interactive, context-driven web help explains every concept or term used. The PDMS is organized in three main sections. The Well Tables Section includes such information as well location descriptions, completion zones, logs, operators, lease names, tests, reports, hydrocarbon shows, samples, cores, geologic formations and tops, and directional survey data. The Map Viewer Section contains many user-selectable layer options for showing well locations, petroleum fields, producing formations, aerial photographs, and topographic maps. Wells shown in the Map Viewer are hyperlinked to the Well Tables for easy access to the well data. The Fields and Production Section summarizes oil, natural gas, and gas storage field data, including historical oil production volumes in both tables and charts

Twenty rovibronic lines of the e 3Σ–(ν' = 5) – X 1Σ+(ν'' = 0) band of 12 C 16O for which laboratory wavelengths were previously unavailable were identified in laser-induced fluorescence excitation spectra. Wavelengths were assigned to five rovibronic transitions to an average accuracy of 0.0028 Å. A further 15 lines could not be fully resolved and average wavelengths were measured for these groups of closely spaced lines. A wavelength difference of 0.011 ± 0.0028 Å between the measured wavelengths and the calculated wavelengths in the atlas of Eidelsberg & Rostas demonstrates the need for more experimental data on CO.https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/2041-8205/714/2/L268Publisher's versio
